Zero Waste - Where We Started
I was watching the news one day in May of 2018. I was... so SO angry. I was angry about everything going on in the world. And for the first time, I said to myself "You should be angry... until you do something about it." This was different from my usual rhetoric, trying to calm myself down. So I started thinking about how to make a difference in the world. I was pretty passionate about our environment already so it was a logical step to get into promoting zero waste.
I got together with my mom and a best friend to incorporate Macon Zero. Filed the paperwork and planned an event - first event was on June 2nd 2018, called Summer Sizzle. I purchased many reusable water bottles & cups and reusable bags. I bought several snacks in mason jars from the bulk nuts section at Kroger. I bought wayyy too much produce for making smoothies.
I hung flyers in business windows all over town and turned out about 100 guests to enjoy smoothies, several games, and a bouncy house. The purpose of Summer Sizzle was to promote environmental stewardship and zero waste - to inspire people to care for their earth and not to landfill goods which are better turned into new products.
We've pulled back greatly from the zero waste mission, but it is still a passion of mine. We have some big ideas as well as some small ideas (like educational flyers), but I haven't had the time to work on them. I hope to take more action on the zero waste front in the near future, while still taking care for all the other causes I care about - and my own well being, of course!
